Katz began his Vodka journey many years ago due to his fascination with Russia. It led him to study Russian in college and to even study abroad in Moscow. Katz later moved there after graduating, which helped him perfect his Russian language skills. He was hired by the Brooke Group, now Vector Group in marketing and manufacturing.
Katz moved back to the USA around 2000 and considered importing Russian Vodka. He sampled all of the vodka brands hitting the USA market. His initial goal was to find a Vodka brand and import it to the USA. After more than a dozen trips and touring over 40 factories throughout Russia in 2000-2002, his thoughts changed.
The Russian Vodka’s were good but he was not pleased that it had added sugars, glycerin, and lactic acid. Katz wanted to develop pure Vodka, which led him to the decision that making his own recipe. Katz realized his vodka needed to be made from a blend of Russian winter wheat and rye. It is pricier, but was the taste Katz wanted for his brand. He also invested in a patented bottle design that makes it beautiful to display in your home or restaurant.
When Zyr first hit the USA market, it had gone through 9 filtrations, 5 distillations, and 3 tastings. That same process continues today.
Katz began selling his Zyr Vodka in July 2002 in two locations, NYC and the Hamptons. His next step was to move operations out of NYC to South Beach Florida where he and his small team worked out of his apartment.

“Centuries of Russian Vodka making traditions are integrated with the most innovative and filtration distillation technology available today. Zyr starts with clean, naturally filtered water from Russia’s North West, not far from the Finnish border. The water is then filtered five times in preparation for its marriage to the fermented blend of grains. After the five distillations of Zyr’s mash, Zyr is filtered four more times using carefully selected birch tree charcoal granules to remove any remaining impurities and round out the taste,” David Katz.
