As Olena Medical welcomes Dr. Paul Langevin as its new CEO, we sat down with him to discuss his background, vision, and what makes Olena a standout in the field of anesthesia care. Whether you're undergoing a same-day procedure at a surgery center or a more complex operation at a hospital, anesthesia plays a critical role in your care.
Q: Dr. Langevin, congratulations on your new role as CEO. What drew you to Olena Medical?
Dr. Langevin: Thank you. I joined Olena because it represents something rare in today’s healthcare environment: a physician-owned, physician-led organization that prioritizes both patient care and service to our clients. The company understands that you can’t separate those two things—they go hand in hand. What’s most compelling to me is the culture. People here are rewarded for doing what they love, and that translates to an authentic, enduring dedication to excellence. That’s the kind of organization I want to be part of.
Q: Can you share a bit about your professional journey that brought you to this point?
Dr. Langevin: Sure. My path has been shaped by both clinical work and leadership roles. I studied Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology and then cardiovascular physiology before earning my MD from the University of Missouri-Columbia. From there, I completed training in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Cardiac Anesthesia, and Critical Care at places like SUNY Stony Brook, the University of Florida, and Dartmouth. I’ve conducted both basic sciences and clinical research. Along the way, I also pursued an MBA.
I’ve held leadership roles at academic institutions like Yale, the University of Florida, and Drexel, where I led cardiovascular anesthesiology and critical care programs, launched ECMO and deployable shock resuscitative programs, and developed an outreach program for underprivileged kids. I developed two unique residency programs later at other institutions.
Promoting and encouraging clinical excellence is predicated on organizational leadership which is sadly lacking in today’s healthcare environment.
Q: How did the pandemic shape your perspective on healthcare and leadership?
Dr. Langevin: The pandemic was a defining moment in so many ways. Personally, I returned to frontline ICU care exclusively. It reminded me why we do this work—to help people in their most vulnerable moments. It also reinforced how vital leadership is during a crisis. After that experience, I had the opportunity to create and lead a new anesthesia department and craft another residency training program. That experience taught me how myopic healthcare executives can be. That perspective is something I carry with me at Olena and attracted me to the company, we are building a business that confronts problems with novel solutions while preserving our core values, excellence in patient care and dedication to service.
Q: Olena Medical has a unique approach to anesthesia services. How would you describe that difference?
Dr. Langevin: Most anesthesia companies focus solely on providing safe care to the patients referred to them. There is nothing wrong in that but it represents a baseline. At Olena, we go beyond that. We form real partnerships with our clients—not just clinically, but also in administration, operations, and even marketing. We help our partners grow and improve their business, and in doing so, we grow too.
Our physicians don’t just care for patients—they understand the business of medicine. They work closely with clients to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the patient experience. That kind of alignment between patient care and industry is rare, and it’s one of the things that sets Olena apart.
Q: How do you ensure high standards of care while also emphasizing business growth?
Dr. Langevin: It’s about creating a culture of excellence. We attract top-tier clinicians who aspire to excellence. Well over half of our physicians are fellowship trained and several are trained in multiple specialties. We support them, encourage them and foster their development. Every member of our company is allowed to do what they love and encouraged try new endeavors. This makes their work less of a job and more of a passion and they excel.
Beyond that, every member of the team understands that while our first responsibility is to our patients, we must also provide service to our colleagues and our clients. Where most anesthesia service providers see these as competing priorities that they try to balance, Olena recognizes they are synergistic.
Our clinicians have the training and experience to provide exceptional care, but they also understand their role in supporting the broader mission. Our administrative personnel have a central role in creating the support our clinicians need to succeed.
That’s why every team member is incentivized to excel—not just in medicine, but also in service and leadership. When our people thrive, our clients thrive, and most importantly, our patients receive the best possible care.
Q: What excites you most about this next chapter for Olena?
Dr. Langevin: There’s a tremendous opportunity here. We have the talent, the leadership, and the vision to redefine how anesthesia is delivered. We’re not just reacting to changes in healthcare—we’re shaping them. I’m excited to lead a team that’s committed, innovative, and deeply aligned with our core values. This is more than a company. It’s a movement back to physician-led medicine, and I’m honored to be a part of it.
Q: Dr. Chaobal, as Chairman of the Board, what does Dr. Langevin’s appointment mean for Olena’s future?
Dr. Harshvardhan Chaobal: Dr. Langevin is the right leader for this moment. He brings unmatched clinical and business experience, from growing practices to leading academic departments. He’s a veteran, a firefighter, a researcher, and an educator. His integrity and vision align perfectly with Olena’s mission to provide the highest quality care while supporting our medical professionals and our clients. We’re thrilled to have him leading us forward.
